Submarine cables are mainly used in two fields, one is offshore oil rigs, and the other is offshore wind energy transmission.

The construction of offshore oil rigs will effectively drive the demand for submarine cables. At present, drilling platforms can be divided into two types according to the movement mode: jack-up and semi-submersible platforms. The former requires about 150 kilometers of submarine cables and the latter requires about 180 kilometers. In addition, each platform can be divided into drilling platform, production platform and living platform according to their functions. The demand for submarine cables is about 200 kilometers, 200 kilometers and 100 kilometers respectively. At present, there are approximately 10,000 kilometers of submarine cable gaps in new domestic and offshore platforms.

The development of new energy is one of the key points of the industry's "12th Five-Year Plan". Wind energy, especially offshore wind energy, has great potential. China has a long coastline and numerous islands, which can provide more wind farms than inland. However, the power generated by the wind power can be transmitted to the local power grid for unified deployment, which requires high transmission performance of submarine cables.

According to Zhang Zhonghua, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Wire and Cable Association, currently only domestic submarine cables of 35,000 kV and below can be produced, and the production technology of 110,000 kV submarine cables is almost entirely controlled by foreign countries. If China is to develop low-cost and efficient offshore wind energy, it must increase research investment in new products.

In addition, the military market is also favored by cable companies. Although the domestic shipbuilding industry is currently experiencing a cold winter, some heavy industry companies still have considerable orders for ships from fishery administrations and sea surveillance. In the future, China's peaceful development of the ocean will have more demand for official ships. This is undoubtedly a good thing for large cable companies with brand advantages and technological advantages.
